Summary

Approximately sixty days before your certification expiration date, PTCB will send a Recertification Application (available for download in PDF format) to you. Complete the application, sign it and return to PTCB along with a check or money order for the applicable amount (see Fees below). Alternatively, you can recertify online through the Recertification area of MyPTCB. To avoid a late fee, your application must be postmarked or entered online on or before your expiration date. Please be sure to list your continuing education hours, but do not send in your continuing education certificates unless requested to do so as part of the PTCB audit process (see Audits below). Once PTCB has received your recertification materials, you will receive a new wallet card and new PTCB certificate in approximately sixty days. Failure to successfully complete the recertification requirements will result in the loss of PTCB certification. Please submit your completed application well in advance of the deadline in order to allow time for the application to be returned if an error was made in completing the application. There will be no exceptions or extensions to the postmark deadlines.

Procedure

PTCB certification must be renewed every two years.
Recertification materials will be sent to you approximately sixty days before your certification expiration date. Contact PTCB to update your address.
Carefully review the Recertification Requirements and Guidelines before completing the Recertification Application (both in PDF format).
Twenty contact hours of pharmacy-related continuing education are required for recertification; see our Continuing Education page.
Complete and sign the application or complete an online application.
Write a check or money order made payable to the "Pharmacy Technician Certification Board" or "PTCB". See Fees below to determine amount.
Mail the completed application and payment if completing a paper application to
   PTCB
   P.O. Box 75430
   Baltimore, MD 21275

Allow 90 days for receipt of a new PTCB certificate. Your application will be returned if an error has occurred.
Please note: The address to return your recertification application is in Baltimore, Maryland, not Washington, DC. Mailing applications to Washington, DC will only cause a further delay of the processing of your application.

Deadlines

PTCB has three recertification deadline periods per year: March, July and November. The recertification deadlines will correspond with the months that the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination is administered. Please refer to the recertification schedule outlined below:

Expiration Date Recert Begins Recert Deadline Late Recert Deadline

November 30, 2005 August 22, 2005 November 30, 2005 February 28, 2006

March 31, 2006 December 21, 2005 March 31, 2006 June 30, 2006

July 31, 2006 April 22, 2006 July 31, 2006 October 31, 2006

November 30, 2006 August 22, 2006 November 30, 2006 February 28, 2007

Audits

A certain number of Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhTs) will be chosen at random for an audit of continuing education. If you are audited, please list all continuing education hours on the application AND send photocopies of the certificates of participation and the PTCB Universal Continuing Education Form(s). All continuing education documentation should be kept at least one year beyond your certification expiration date. CPhTs may be audited at any time at the discretion of PTCB. Audit candidates may not recertify online; therefore the Audit application fee is $35. Only those randomly selected as audits may complete the audit applications.

Fees

Recertification fees in the amount of $50 in the form of a check (personal, corporate, or certified) or money order are to be included with your paper application. Alternatively, completion of an online application recertification application requires a payment of $35 with a credit card or eCheck. Credit card and eCheck payments are only available for online recertification applicants. Any recertification applications received after the postmark deadline must include an additional late fee of $15, for a total of $65 for paper recertification applications and $50 for online recertification applications. Returned applications require a $10 reprocessing fee.

Refunds

Refund checks for overpayment of recertification or reinstatement fees will be issued four to six weeks from the date your application is processed; a $15 administrative fee is applied. Recertification or Reinstatement candidates who submit both online and paper applications or pay multiple times online are also subject to the $15 administrative fee. Recertification or Reinstatement candidates who submit payment, but choose not to complete their requirements are also subject to the $15 administrative fee. Your overpayment cannot be applied toward future recertification or reinstatement applications.
